Hiding Behind a Mask

On October 31, 2010 we novembercelebrated Halloween. As the kids with their costumes and masks were going door to door trick or treating, it occurred to me how easy we could hide behind a costume and mask.

Even though we don't generally wear a costume and mask every day, are you letting your close friends know the real You or are you pretending?

Thinking about this question, it becomes evident most people are playing a role. Are you one of them?

Try the short quiz below to determine the part you are playing.

Quiz:
  1. Are you honest when a close friend asks, "How are you doing?"
  2. When someone is discussing a topic and you have no clue what they are talking about, do you pretend you know about the subject or ask questions?
  3. When you are feeling frustrated or sad, do you call a friend and let him or her know how you are feeling, or do you struggle with these feelings by yourself?
Review your answers and determine what small step you can take to share who you are.

Small Step Suggestions:
  1. The next time a close friend asks how you are doing, instead of automatically answering, "Fine," take a deep breath and answer honestly. Even though this may seem hard, letting yourself share your thoughts and feelings will provide an opportunity for support.
  2. When you are clueless about a topic, become curious and ask questions so you can understand and contribute your thoughts.
  3. Call a friend when your feelings are playing havoc. Letting others know what is going on builds relationships and support systems. Why be alone when you can enjoy others' support and friendship?
